Susan B. Anthony House tour and cooking class explore suffrage-era food and history Hunter Wright News10NBC ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Susan B. Anthony House and Cassis Culinary are hosting a Tour and Cooking Class on Saturday, aiming to explore the food and history of the suffrage era. The cooking class was at The Commissary, and a museum tour and dessert are expected to follow at the house. Participants learned how Susan B. Anthony’s 1898 sponge cake was made. Renee Nastri-Windisch, chef-owner of Cassis Culinary, talked about the story behind the making of a sponge cake, including that it was Anthony’s favorite dessert. “So I am working in collaboration with the Susan B. Anthony House for this very special menu. So I’ve been researching suffrage-era cooking, and in doing that, I went right to the Susan B. Anthony House, and they were really welcoming and shared a recipe with me from a letter that Susan B. Anthony wrote to college students. It was a draft letter, on how to make her favorite sponge cake,” she said. She also mentioned that the recipe for the cake didn’t have measurements back then. So, Nastri-Windisch reconstructed the cake. The classes also featured dishes from Hattie A. Burr’s 1886 book called, “The Woman Sufferage Cook Book.” The cooking class went from 1:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. and the tour goes from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.
